Work Ideas Events About Contact Search October 24, 2011 Craft in Interaction and Service Design By Peter Merholz 4 Comments Last week saw the latest release of Instapaper a service for saving web pages for reading later . It seems like a simple thing , but Instapaper has embedded itself into my life surprisingly deeply , and is a must-have for folks who find themselves with dozens of tabs in their browser of articles they want to read , but don't quite have the time for right now . Instapaper also proves quite instructive of how to deliver great . experiences Given my love of the service , what I find most inspiring is that it is essentially the creation of one person , Marco Arment Originally begun as a side project while he was the CTO of Tumblr about a year ago he decided to focus on it

. Work Ideas Events About Contact Search October 18, 2011 The Challenges of Creative Leadership Sarah B . Nelson at UX Week 2011 By Peter Merholz 1 Comment I met Sarah B . Nelson in Spring 2006, as she was figuring out where she wanted a summer internship while she was getting her masters from the Institute of Design in Chicago . When she shared her student work , one thing stood out among the rest a paper she had written on the creative process of the Neo-Futurists PDF a remarkable avant-garde theater troupe . Having seen them perform , I loved Sarah's deconstruction of how they work , and I knew that I wanted to work with anyone who thought like . that Sarah came on as an intern , and never went back to school . • The Great Oracle v Google Android Trial Postponed Indefinitely

    Updated: 2011-10-20 23:19:01
District Court Judge William Alsup Wednesday postponed Google’s billion-dollar-plus trial for allegedly infringing Oracle’s Java patents and copyrights in Android that was tentatively set to start October 31. No new date has been scheduled. Judge Alsup previously warned that he might have to vacate the date reportedly to hear a murder trial that starts October 24 and could run until January or February but now he’s told Oracle and Google’s lawyers that he might shift their case to another judge. Complaining that he’s never been so overworked in the 37 years of his professional life, he told them, “Your case is huge and needs the attention of somebody who can give it more time than I can.” read more

  • Oracle v Google Trial Date May Slip

    Updated: 2011-10-05 22:55:54
Seems we will probably be deprived of the spectacle of Oracle going after Google and Google doing a lot of whimpering because it looks like the Oracle v Google trial over Google’s use of Java, which is set to start on Halloween, will probably be postponed to give precedence to a big unrelated criminal trial. The FOSS Patents blog says that the trial judge, William Alsup, is making postponement noises. It says he “just put in a new ‘notice re pretrial conference,’ which says that the Oracle-Google trial ‘will likely be postponed’ and that the Halloween trial date ‘will not yet be vacated’ though it ‘now seems unlikely’ to work out.” read more

    Updated: 2011-10-05 18:23:00
Salesforce CEO and sometime drama queen Marc Benioff claimed on Twitter Tuesday night that Oracle had canceled his keynote speech entitled “Welcome to the Social Enterprise” scheduled for 10:15 the following morning at Oracle OpenWorld. He said he was moving it to a restaurant in the St Regis because “The show must go on! Sorry Larry!” Oracle said the speech wasn’t canceled just moved to Thursday morning at 8am due to “overwhelming attendance” at the conference. Oracle, however, is hosting a concert Wednesday night featuring Sting and Tom Petty so only party poopers are expected to be up and out early Thursday morning, making rescheduling tantamount to a cancellation. read more</p

  • Book Review: Java The Complete Reference, 8th Edition

    Updated: 2011-10-05 06:53:10
This is a great place to start learning Java. I think the book is good for beginners to start learning Java, as well as great reference for those experienced with Java. The book does not use an IDE to create, compile, and run the programs. It uses javac and java commands to compile and run. I used both the SDK command lines and the IntelliJ IDEA Community Edition to compile and run the programs. Both worked fine, but I also have an interest in learning to use IntelliJ IDEA. The book covers the Java language, the Java Library, Software Development with Java Beans, Swing, Servlets, and ends with building 2 sample applications. <pread more
